Our take

The XL is the cartridge Brother actually expects you to run these printers on. 3,000 pages at ISO coverage works out around 3p a page, and because it's genuine you'll never see the "non-Brother supply" warning or a cartridge that reports empty at 60%. If you'd rather not spend £90 in one go, the compatible twin-pack below is the realistic alternative for text-only printing.

Brother also lists a TN-2510XXL (5,000 pages) — worth a look if you're doing 300+ pages a month, though Amazon UK stock is patchy.

Genuine vs compatible — which should you buy?

Genuine cartridges cost more per page but carry the maker's warranty, hit the quoted page yield reliably, and never trip firmware "unrecognised cartridge" blocks.

Compatible (third-party) cartridges are typically 40–70% cheaper. Quality is fine from reputable sellers, but yields are optimistic, colour accuracy varies, and some brands (HP with HP+ in particular) actively block them. For a mono laser printing text, compatibles are usually the sensible buy; for colour or warranty-critical kit, stay genuine.
