Best Paper Shredder UK 2026 — Cross-Cut, Micro-Cut & Auto-Feed Picks

A shredder is the one piece of office kit everyone buys on price and regrets. The £30 strip-cut unit jams, overheats after two minutes and leaves strips a bored teenager could reassemble. Spend £50–£100 on a cross-cut and it'll last a decade.

These are the eight shredders worth buying in the UK in 2026, ranked by use case: light home use, busy small office, confidential documents, and "I have a filing cabinet to clear". All prices and stock live from Amazon UK.

Rexel · 10 sheets, cross-cut (P-4)

Best overall — big bin, best reviews, sensible price

Nearly four thousand reviews at 4.3★ make the Momentum X410 the most-trusted shredder on Amazon UK, and it earns it: ten sheets a pass, a 23-litre bin that holds 250+ shredded sheets so you're not emptying it every session, and Rexel's anti-jam reverse that actually works. P-4 cross-cut is the right security level for bank statements and letters.

It's around £75. The Fellowes FS-9C is £25 cheaper but its 14-litre bin fills twice as fast — for a home office that shreds weekly, the Rexel's bin is the difference between a chore and a non-event.

Fellowes · 9 sheets, cross-cut (P-4)

Best budget cross-cut — the sensible £50 shredder

If you shred a handful of envelopes a week, the FS-9C is all you need: nine sheets, P-4 cross-cut, takes staples and cards, and Fellowes' build quality at £50. The catch is the three-minute continuous run time before it needs a 30-minute rest — fine for post, frustrating for a box of old paperwork.

Fellowes · 10 sheets, micro-cut (P-5)

Best for confidential documents — P-5 micro-cut

Cross-cut (P-4) is fine for household post. For client files, HR records, medical or legal paperwork — anything GDPR would call sensitive — micro-cut (P-5) is the professional standard: 4 × 12 mm particles that are genuinely unreconstructable. This Fellowes is the best-value P-5 unit that isn't an office monster, with a ten-minute run time and a motor quiet enough for a shared room.

Rexel · 100-sheet auto-feed, cross-cut (P-4)

Best auto-feed — load a file, walk away

Auto-feed shredders change the job entirely. Lift the lid, drop in up to 100 sheets — a whole client file, staples and all — close it, and come back to a full bin. The Optimum AutoFeed+ 100 is Rexel's small-office model with a 34-litre bin and a lockable tray so confidential paper can't be retrieved mid-shred. If you have a backlog of boxes or shred daily, this is the one that gets used.

Rexel · 45-sheet auto-feed, cross-cut (P-4)

Best value auto-feed

The 45-sheet tray version for £125 — half the price of the 100 and the same mechanism. For a home office with a monthly shredding pile rather than a daily one it's the smarter buy. Check the price of the 50-sheet model below too; Amazon often prices them within a few pounds of each other.

Rexel · 12 sheets, cross-cut (P-3)

More capacity in the Momentum family

The X312 takes 12–13 sheets a pass in the same slimline chassis as the X410 with the same 23-litre bin. Note it's rated P-3 rather than P-4 — slightly larger particles — so it's a capacity upgrade, not a security one.

Fellowes · 12 sheets, cross-cut (P-4)

Fellowes' step-up from the FS-9C

Twelve sheets, an 18-litre bin, five-minute run time and Fellowes' SafeSense technology that stops the blades if fingers touch the paper entry — worth it in a house with children. Around £83.

Rexel · 50-sheet auto-feed, cross-cut (P-4)

Same as the 45 with a slightly bigger tray

Functionally the AutoFeed+ 45 with five more sheets of tray. Buy whichever of the two is cheaper on the day.

How to choose a shredder

Security level (DIN P-rating): P-2 strip-cut — don't. P-3 / P-4 cross-cut — right for household post, statements, invoices. P-5 micro-cut — confidential business, client and personal data; the level most GDPR guidance points to. P-6/P-7 — government and defence, not needed here.

Sheet capacity vs run time: A 9-sheet shredder that runs for 3 minutes clears less paper than a 6-sheet one that runs for 10. Look at both numbers. Cheap shredders overheat and then lock you out for half an hour.

Bin size: Under 15 litres means emptying every session. 20+ litres for a home office; 30+ for a shared one.

Auto-feed: If you shred more than a few pages a week, an auto-feed tray is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade in office equipment. You load a stack and leave.

Oil it: Cross-cut and micro-cut blades need shredder oil every couple of bin-fulls or they slow down and jam. Lubricant sheets are the tidy way to do it.

Frequently asked questions

For most homes the Rexel Momentum X410 is the best buy: 10-sheet cross-cut, a 23-litre bin and the best review record of any shredder on Amazon UK, at around £75. If you only shred a few envelopes a week, the Fellowes FS-9C at £50 is enough.

Cross-cut (P-4) is fine for household post and statements. Micro-cut (P-5) produces particles too small to reassemble and is the standard for confidential business, client, medical or HR paperwork under GDPR.

All the shredders in this guide take staples and credit cards; the Rexel AutoFeed+ models also take paper clips. Never feed cardboard, laminated sheets or CDs unless the manual specifically allows it.

Thermal cut-out. Every consumer shredder has a rated continuous run time (3 to 10 minutes here) followed by a cool-down of 20–40 minutes. Auto-feed models avoid the problem because they pace the work themselves.
