Best Portable Document Scanner UK 2026 — Travel & Field Picks
By Seb Clark, Editor, UniDoc Solutions·Updated
Portable scanners are for one job: digitising paper when you're not at your desk. That means USB-powered (no mains adapter), under 1.2 kg, and fast enough to be worth pulling out of the bag.
Four current models are worth recommending in the UK in 2026. None of them will out-scan a desktop ADF — but they fit in a backpack.
At a glance — the shortlist
| # | Model | Best for | Speed | Price band | Buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brother ADS-1300 | Best overall — the only portable with a real ADF | 30 ppm / 60 ipm duplex | £170-£210 | Amazon |
| 2 | Canon imageFORMULA P-215II (portable) | The reliable classic | 15 ppm / 30 ipm duplex | £160-£200 | Amazon |
| 3 | Epson WorkForce ES-50 (ultra-portable) | Lightest in the room | 5.5 sec per page (~11 ppm) | £130-£170 | Amazon |
| 4 | Canon imageFORMULA P-208II Scan-tini | Cheap, simple, light personal use | 8 ppm duplex | £140-£180 | Amazon |
Brother · 30 ppm / 60 ipm duplex · £170-£210
Best overall — the only portable with a real ADF
The ADS-1300 is the new portable to beat. 30 ppm duplex (60 ipm) with a 20-sheet automatic feeder you can leave running while you do something else. USB-C powered. ID card slot for credit-card-style docs. £170-210.
If you've been using a Canon P-215 since 2015 and miss the duplex feeder when you're on the road, this is the upgrade.
Canon · 15 ppm / 30 ipm duplex · £160-£200
The reliable classic
The Canon P-215II is genuinely small, genuinely fast (15 ppm duplex) and runs off USB. It's been the field-rep favourite for years. Bundled with CaptureOnTouch which is the easiest portable-scanner software you'll use. Sold via the Canon UK store and Amazon, around £180.
Epson · 5.5 sec per page (~11 ppm) · £130-£170
Lightest in the room
At 270g and a single-sheet feed, the ES-50 is the one you actually remember to bring. No ADF — you feed pages one at a time — but at 5.5 seconds per page that's fine for the use case (the odd receipt or contract). Scans to PDF, JPEG, cloud or email via the Epson Smart Panel app.
Canon · 8 ppm duplex · £140-£180
Cheap, simple, light personal use
The smaller sibling to the P-215. 10-sheet feeder, 8 ppm duplex, driverless. Around £140. Pick this only if budget rules and you mostly scan one or two pages at a time.
What "portable" really means
A true portable runs off USB power — no mains brick to carry. The Brother ADS-1300 is the only one here that's portable and has an ADF. Everything else is a single-sheet feed or a 10-20 sheet manual stack.
Battery? None of these have an internal battery — they draw power from the USB port. If you need to scan untethered, the Epson DS-30000 portable has battery + Wi-Fi but it's £600 and not worth it for most users.
OCR on the device? No, every portable here does OCR on the phone or computer after the scan. That's fine.
