Best Paper Trimmer & Guillotine UK 2026 — Rotary vs Lever Picks

There are two kinds of paper cutter and they're for different jobs. A rotary trimmer has a small enclosed blade that slides along a rail — safe, precise, a few sheets at a time. A lever guillotine has a long exposed blade on an arm — cuts through stacks, needs respect.

Five current models worth buying in the UK, led by Dahle, whose German-made trimmers dominate the reviews for good reason.

Dahle · 8 sheets, A4 (320 mm)

Best overall — the safe, accurate default

The 507 is the trimmer to buy for a home office, classroom or craft desk. The rotary blade is fully enclosed (safe around children), self-sharpening, and cuts eight sheets cleanly along a printed grid with A-size markings. Replacement blade heads are cheap and take seconds to swap. Around £35, 2,400+ reviews at 4.4★.

Dahle · 6 sheets, A4 (320 mm)

Best for photos and crafts

The 502 is the 507's slightly smaller sibling — six sheets rather than eight — and the most-reviewed trimmer in the UK with over 4,000 ratings. Photographers and card-makers buy it for the dead-straight cuts on photo paper and card. If you mostly cut one or two sheets at a time and want the best edge, this over the 507.

Dahle · 15 sheets, A4 (340 mm)

Best guillotine — for cutting stacks

When you're trimming 200 flyers to size or cutting business cards from stock, a rotary trimmer at 6–8 sheets a pass is agony. The Dahle 533 lever guillotine takes 15 sheets a cut with a Solingen steel blade, a blade lock and a finger guard. It's £105 and it's an office tool, not a family one — keep it locked.

Swordfish · 10 sheets, A4

Budget rotary with more capacity

Ten sheets a pass for under £30, and Swordfish sell straight, wave and perforating blade heads for it. The base is lighter than the Dahle's and the grid less precise, but for occasional use it's very good value.

Ediesi · 12 sheets, A3

Cheapest A3

An A3-capable trimmer for around £20 is unusual, and 2,400 reviews say it broadly works. Expect a plastic base and a blade that dulls faster than Dahle's. Right for someone who needs to cut A3 occasionally and won't spend £60+ on a Dahle 508.

Rotary trimmer vs guillotine

Rotary trimmer: enclosed round blade on a sliding head. Safe, precise, ideal for photos, card, labels, and cutting one to ten sheets. Blades are replaceable and cheap. Buy this unless you regularly cut stacks.

Lever guillotine: long blade on an arm, cuts 15–30+ sheets at once. Faster for volume, dangerous without a guard and lock. Office use only.

Capacity: quoted for 70–80 gsm paper. Halve it for card or photo paper.

Cut length: A4 trimmers cut ~320 mm (the long edge of A4); A3 models ~460 mm. Most people never need A3.

Blades: Dahle and Swordfish sell replacement heads for £8–£15. Self-sharpening designs (Dahle) last years.

Frequently asked questions

The Dahle 507 A4 rotary trimmer. It's safe (enclosed blade), accurate, cuts 8 sheets, has cheap replacement blades and thousands of positive reviews. For photos and card the Dahle 502 is a close alternative.

A trimmer uses a small rotary blade that slides along a rail and cuts a few sheets at a time safely. A guillotine has a long lever-mounted blade that cuts through stacks of 15+ sheets but needs a guard and lock — it's an office tool.

Rotary trimmers cut 6–12 sheets of 80 gsm paper per pass (Dahle 502: 6, Dahle 507: 8, Swordfish Slimline: 10). Lever guillotines like the Dahle 533 cut 15 or more.
