Best Laminator UK 2026 — A4, A3 and Automatic Picks

Laminators are a rare category where the cheap option is genuinely fine. A £30 pouch laminator from GBC or Fellowes will do everything a home, classroom or small office needs — the decisions are A4 or A3, and whether you want a jam-release lever.

Six current models, ranked. Pouches are sold separately and are the real running cost; see the supplies note at the bottom.

GBC · A3, 80-125 micron, ~3 min warm-up

Best overall — A3 capability for £45, and the UK's best-seller

Buy A3 even if you think you only need A4. The GBC Inspire+ A3 costs £15 more than the A4 version, takes both pouch sizes, and the first time you want to laminate a poster or a two-page spread you'll be glad. Nearly 700 reviews at 4.6★ and a starter pack of pouches in the box.

It's a simple two-roller hot laminator with one heat setting — no jam-release lever — so feed pouches straight and sealed-edge first. That's true of every laminator at this price.

GBC · A4, 80-125 micron, ~3 min warm-up

Best budget A4

The same machine in A4 for under £30. If you're certain you'll never laminate anything larger than a sheet of paper, it's the cheapest reputable option and stores on its end in a drawer.

Fellowes · A3, 80-125 micron, 4 min warm-up

Best mid-range — the jam-release lever matters

The Fellowes Spectra adds the two features that stop laminators being annoying: a release lever that lets you pull a misfed pouch back out instead of scraping melted plastic off the rollers, and separate 80 / 125 micron heat settings so thick pouches come out clear rather than cloudy. Around £63 for A3; if you laminate weekly rather than yearly, it's worth it over the GBC.

Fellowes · A4, 80-125 micron, 4 min warm-up

Spectra features in A4

Same jam lever and dual heat settings, A4 only, about £49. Sits between the GBC Inspire+ A4 and A3 on price.

Fellowes · A3, 80-125 micron, 4 min warm-up

Cheapest A3 from a real brand

Fellowes' new entry-level A3 at around £34 — undercutting even the GBC Inspire+ A3. Fewer reviews so far but it's a current-generation Fellowes with a four-minute warm-up and 80/125 micron support. If price is the only criterion, this.

GBC · Automatic, 30 A4 sheets per load

Best for volume — fully automatic

The Foton 30 is a different kind of machine. There are no pouches: it uses refillable film cartridges, and you stack up to 30 A4 sheets in a feeder and walk away. For a school office, church, or business that laminates dozens of sheets a week it replaces hours of standing at a pouch machine. £550 buys a lot of pouches, so this only makes sense at volume — but at volume it's transformative.

How to choose

A4 or A3? A3 machines cost £15–£20 more and take A4 pouches too. Unless space is critical, buy A3.

Micron rating: Pouch thickness per side. 80 micron is standard (flexible, cheap); 125 micron is stiff — signs, menus, ID cards; 250 micron is rigid and needs a machine rated for it (none of the home units here). Every laminator in this guide handles 80 and 125.

Warm-up time: 3–5 minutes on all of these. Buy the Foton if that annoys you.

Jam release: A lever that lets you back a stuck pouch out. The Fellowes Spectra has one; the GBC Inspire+ and Fellowes Sola don't. If you laminate odd shapes or thick card, get the lever.

Pouches: Buy 100-packs of 80 micron A4 from GBC, Fellowes or a well-reviewed compatible brand; they cost 5–8p each. Always laminate with the sealed edge going in first, and never run an empty carrier through.

Frequently asked questions

The GBC Inspire+ A3 — around £45, handles A4 and A3 pouches up to 125 micron, and is the best-reviewed laminator on Amazon UK. If you want a jam-release lever and dual heat settings, step up to the Fellowes Spectra A3.

A3. The price difference is small (typically £15–£20), A3 machines take A4 pouches, and you'll eventually want to laminate a poster, certificate or two-page spread.

80 micron for everyday documents and flexible signs; 125 micron for stiff items like menus, ID cards and outdoor notices. All the laminators here support both. Check the pouch pack says the same micron on each side ("2 × 80").

Cloudy usually means the machine wasn't fully warmed up or the heat setting is too low for the pouch thickness; run it through again. Wavy means too hot or the pouch was fed at an angle. Machines with 80/125 settings like the Fellowes Spectra avoid both.
