Our take
Cross-cut and micro-cut blades need lubricating or they slow, heat up and jam — it's the single most common reason a £75 shredder gets binned after two years. Oil sheets are a folded sheet of paper impregnated with lubricant: feed one through like a normal page, done. No bottle, no mess. Rule of thumb: one sheet every time you empty the bin twice, or whenever the motor sounds laboured.

Genuine vs compatible — which should you buy?
Genuine cartridges cost more per page but carry the maker's warranty, hit the quoted page yield reliably, and never trip firmware "unrecognised cartridge" blocks.
Compatible (third-party) cartridges are typically 40–70% cheaper. Quality is fine from reputable sellers, but yields are optimistic, colour accuracy varies, and some brands (HP with HP+ in particular) actively block them. For a mono laser printing text, compatibles are usually the sensible buy; for colour or warranty-critical kit, stay genuine.
