By Seb Clark, Editor, UniDoc Solutions·Updated

The iX1600 for most offices — its software is in a different league. The ES-580W wins only if you routinely scan 50+ page stacks.

Which should you buy?

Both are touchscreen, Wi-Fi, PC-optional A4 document scanners at similar prices, and on paper the ES-580W looks better: a 100-sheet feeder against the iX1600's 50, and it's often £50 cheaper. In use the iX1600 pulls ahead on the things you touch every day. ScanSnap Home is the best scanning software on the market — its automatic document naming, receipt and business-card recognition, and one-tap profiles are why accountants standardise on ScanSnap. Epson's ScanSmart is perfectly functional but clunkier, and the ES-580W is a little slower at 35 ppm versus 40.

Buy the ES-580W if your workflow is "drop a fat stack of paper in and walk away" — 100 sheets unattended is a real advantage. For everything else, the iX1600.
