| Best for | Mixed document types — ID cards, receipts and standard A4 in one tray. | Single-user offices that don't need wireless — same engine as iX1600 for less money. |
Which should you buy?
Two USB desktop scanners at similar money. The R40 is the more flexible feeder: 60 sheets, and it takes receipts, plastic ID cards and very long documents in the same tray, with nine programmable job buttons. The iX1400 holds 50 sheets but runs ScanSnap Home, the best scanning software available — automatic file naming, receipt and business-card recognition, one blue button that just works.
For a bookkeeper digitising mixed paperwork, the R40's feeder earns its keep. For an office that wants to press one button and never think about it, the iX1400.
