Our take

We list this because it's the highest-rated compatible for the 4002 series and some buyers will want the saving. Be clear-eyed: HP's "Dynamic Security" has a track record of rejecting third-party chips after a firmware update, and when that happens you have a paperweight until the seller ships a new chip. If you go this route, turn off automatic firmware updates in the printer's web interface first.

For a printer that has to work every morning in an office, we'd pay for the genuine 149A.

Genuine vs compatible — which should you buy?

Genuine cartridges cost more per page but carry the maker's warranty, hit the quoted page yield reliably, and never trip firmware "unrecognised cartridge" blocks.

Compatible (third-party) cartridges are typically 40–70% cheaper. Quality is fine from reputable sellers, but yields are optimistic, colour accuracy varies, and some brands (HP with HP+ in particular) actively block them. For a mono laser printing text, compatibles are usually the sensible buy; for colour or warranty-critical kit, stay genuine.
