Our take
TZe is Brother's laminated tape system: the print is sandwiched under a clear layer, so labels don't fade or smear. The PT-D610BT takes any TZe width from 3.5 to 24 mm; 18 mm (TZe-241) is the sweet spot for readable text on a folder spine or a cable, and 12 mm (TZe-231) for smaller items. Genuine cassettes are pricey at around £18 for 8 metres, but with over 9,000 reviews at 4.7★ it's clearly the one people keep coming back to. Compatible TZe tape (Upwinning is the best-reviewed) works in the D610 and costs about a third as much — see below.

Genuine vs compatible — which should you buy?
Genuine cartridges cost more per page but carry the maker's warranty, hit the quoted page yield reliably, and never trip firmware "unrecognised cartridge" blocks.
Compatible (third-party) cartridges are typically 40–70% cheaper. Quality is fine from reputable sellers, but yields are optimistic, colour accuracy varies, and some brands (HP with HP+ in particular) actively block them. For a mono laser printing text, compatibles are usually the sensible buy; for colour or warranty-critical kit, stay genuine.
