Our take
Brother's HL-L3220CW, L3220CDW and L3240CDW all take the TN-248 range (TN-248 standard, TN-248XL high yield). Genuine XL sets are north of £200, which is more than the L3220CW itself costs. This chipped compatible set has the most reviews and the best score of the current crop.
Colour compatibles are a bigger compromise than mono: expect slightly muted colour and less consistent greys. For office documents with the odd colour logo that's fine; if you're printing photos or brand-critical marketing, buy genuine.

Genuine vs compatible — which should you buy?
Genuine cartridges cost more per page but carry the maker's warranty, hit the quoted page yield reliably, and never trip firmware "unrecognised cartridge" blocks.
Compatible (third-party) cartridges are typically 40–70% cheaper. Quality is fine from reputable sellers, but yields are optimistic, colour accuracy varies, and some brands (HP with HP+ in particular) actively block them. For a mono laser printing text, compatibles are usually the sensible buy; for colour or warranty-critical kit, stay genuine.
