| Best for | Low-volume home offices needing occasional colour — cheapest current Brother colour. | Small offices that print colour daily — much faster than the L3220 line. |
Which should you buy?
Same LED colour engine family, same TN-248 toner, very different intent. The HL-L3220CW is Brother's entry colour laser: 18 ppm, Wi-Fi, manual duplex only, about £220. The HL-L3240CDW is the small-office version: 26 ppm, automatic duplex, Wi-Fi plus Ethernet, and it's built for a higher monthly volume. It costs roughly £120 more.
If you print colour a few times a week and mono the rest of the time, the L3220CW does the job and the saving buys a full set of compatible toner. If you print colour daily, both-sided, or the printer serves more than two people, the L3240CDW's speed and duplex will pay for themselves in not standing at the printer. (The L3220CDW sits between them — the L3220 with auto duplex added.)
